Made with found footage overlayed with acrylic, pastels, chalk, & ink on paper.
In ‘Sure,’ we create a digital collage using found footage & hand-drawn overlays. Inspired by the wistful nature of the song, we wanted to picture a life illustrated. We strove to capture the organic style of analog collage and stop-motion graphics while still using a digital medium.

We wanted the emotion in this piece to come from the hand-drawn elements -- the broad or deliberate nature of the strokes, the contrast between two colors, the harshness of a particular color. We knew we wanted to avoid having a true personified ‘subject’ for this piece in order to prioritize the visual style.

We tied everything together by color & form to create a level of cohesion between collage elements and allow for a more abstract mode of storytelling. The song itself is bittersweet, and we wanted to make this video not about a particular person or a particular circumstance, but solely based on that feeling.

PROCESS

For this video we worked with found footage & hand-drawn elements to create a digital collage. We rendered each component individually to assemble footage suitable for subjects and backgrounds of each frame. We then created a wide assortment of color overlays using acrylic paint, oil pastels, chalk, and colored pens, drawing each by hand to capture the texture & overlay on top of the digital composition.
